Various Types and Uses of Roller shutters

Roller shutters are also called as roller doors or sectional overhead doors. These typically consist of several horizontal slats but at times they may consist of bars or web systems which are held together by hinges. The door needs to be raised in order to open and be lowered to close it. This action can be either manual or can be motorized in cases of large doors.

There are many reasons why roller shutters are used. They protect against the elements especially the wind, sleet, hail and the rain. When they are used in front of windows or the main door, they protect against burglary attempts and vandalism.
They are used for doors of vans, kitchens, garages, prisons, warehouses, schools and in so many other places like storage units. There are places where these roller shutters are even subsidized by local governments.

Types of Roller shutters
  1. There are built on roller shutter doors, where the shutter box is fixed outside the building facade.
  2. There are built in roller shutter doors, where these are built into the lintel above the window.
  3. There is the integrated roller shutter, where it is integrated with the window and combined to form a single unit.
  4. There are roller shutters, with tilting laths which resemble Venetian blinds – the only difference is that these are external.
  5. There are manual roller shutters, with a gear drive from the shutter roller right through the facade of the building to the universal joint which is on the room side where there is a cranked winding handle to operate it.
  6. The manual tape drive which is around a flange of the roller can be traced through the entire facade of the building and it has pulley guides to a reel on the side of the room.
  7. There are electric tubular motors which are fitted in the roller and can be used for automatic operation.
  8. There are fire shutters where either the manual roller shutter or the electric roller shutter is linked to the fire alarm system and this closes automatically when the fire alarm has been activated.
