Pros and Cons of Security Alarm Systems

Alarm systems are installed in order to prevent any kind of intrusion or any unauthorized interference of outsiders. It is popularly installed in all types of buildings such as residential, commercial and industrial to ensure protection against burglary or damage of property. The main purpose of these alarm systems is to provide protection against theft. It is also possible for a combination of systems to ensure protection from both fire and intruders. Generally, these alarm systems are connected to CCTV which also record the actions of the intruder.

Advantages of Alarm Systems:

  • Constant Protection – These alarm systems provide 24/7 protection for 365 days from thievery and break-ins. These systems work better than personally appointed security guards as they cannot provide round-the-clock service.
  • Strong Deterrent –  Places with alarm system installations tend to be safe from break-ins and other attempts of damaging property as the burglars are aware of the fact that the place is secure with alarms and other protective mechanisms.
  • Uninterrupted Functionality – There are mainly two types of alarm systems which are used widely: wireless and hand-wired systems. Wireless systems, as the name suggests, work on wireless power that is from batteries and thus work even when electricity cut off. On the other hand, wireless systems do not require frequent battery changes as they directly take power from the electricity source.
  • Can Relocate – Both the types of alarm systems- wireless and hand wired systems can be easily disconnected and relocated.
  • Special Alarm Systems – The systems have developed and modernized according to time, providing protection not only against theft but also fire, flood emergencies or gas leaks. These alarm systems have an inbuilt feature where they can detect smoke or gas leak and also monitor the activities even when one is away.

Disadvantages of Alarm Systems:

  • False Alarm –  Often the alarm systems trigger all by themselves without any reason. These false alarms sometimes also trigger when any family members or known identity tries to get through restricted areas.
  • Expensive – Both types of alarm systems are very expensive when trying to get it installed as they require an investment in the initial stage like purchasing equipment, installation and security monitoring service subscription.
  • Can be stolen – These alarm systems can be stolen or dismantled easily from the place of installation. The wireless system is comparatively easy to dislocate or disconnect. Even the hand-wired alarms can be disconnected from the source of power, thus making it useless.

Important Alarm Systems:

#1. Door and window contacts – They are a reliable and simple source of security which can be installed easily in just a few minutes. Such alarm systems are connected to the intersection point of doors and windows and turn on in case someone tries to open them while the system is activated.

#2. Motion Sensors – Such alarm systems help in detecting any unwanted motion, inside and out. These systems are generally connected to the lighting system of the building and homes and warn immediately when there is some undignified commotion within the property. There are some special types of detectors which can be activated and deactivated voluntarily, that are according to will.

#3. Surveillance Cameras – There are various places in and around a building which can be a good hiding place for burglars and intruders. Putting up surveillance cameras and CCTV that are connected to alarm systems help in lowering the risk of thefts and damage to property as well help in identifying the criminal for any inappropriate behavior at work. It is the ultimate form of security and helps in reducing potential damage.
