All You Need to Know About Marquees

Marquee is a type of large tent that is generally used to shield strong sunlight and rainfall during a running show, event and festival. It’s also used in weddings and other cultural events where large number of people gather wherein they sit or stand as spectators to enjoy the event. Marquee originated from English style weddings where they were first installed as villages in gardens for picnic. But now marquees are common in different parts of the world and are widely used for various types of occasions.

Structure

Marquees are usually supported on poles that is why they are often referred to as Pole Marquees too. Marquees have a long covering at the top which is supported by big wooden poles which are fixed to the ground. Pole takes weight of the entire marquee and fixes it firmly on the ground. Smaller sides around poles are also used to provide a proper support and shape to the fabric on top of it.

Types of marquees

Initially marquees were made of cotton canvas covers and were supported by wooden poles and hessian ropes. Though nowadays there are different varieties of marquees available that are made of different materials and fabrics which are responsible for the growth of trendy and modern marquees. In a country like United Kingdom, marquees were designed in American-style tents with synthetic plastic polymers of PVC.

Some of the poles are also made of aluminum instead of wood that are tied with nylon ropes. Marquees are widely used in village fairs, fetes, festivals, picnics, weddings, election campaigns, cultural events, during annual sports of schools so on and so forth. Most of the marquees used are designed simply with simple water-proof fabric or synthetic plastic materials.

Though marquees used in events like wedding, party or other such occasions possess a costly fabric like muslin or silk that gives it a gaudy theme generally, very much needed for the event. Sometimes flower bouquets, garlands and other decorative items are also fixed to marquee to make them look more attractive. The longevity of a marquee depends on materials by which they are made.

Nowadays, a lot of new fabrics are used for making marquees that are more durable and qualitative. Marquees that last for a longer time without getting torn away easily are made of certain kinds of fabrics or plastics that are washable and easy to clean. In this way, they look new every time they are used. Marquees made of canvas were widely used before and they’re used even now due to those natural ingredients they possess. Natural is vogue.
