#1. Check the toilet:  For water leakage detection the first thing that you must focus on is to find the source of the leakage. Firstly, follow the sound of water dripping and try to locate the spot. If you are unable to find the source, add a few drops of food coloring in the tank of the commode. If the color flows down to the bowl, you can be certain that there is a leak in the flapper at the bottom of the tank. Once you know what the problem exactly is, you can seek professional help and call a plumber.  You can use this technique for the other toilets as well.

#2. Check the meter line: If you could not find the source of the leakage in the toilet, you can check the line running from the meter to the house. Most homes have a shut-off valve by the house; you must shut it off temporarily and check the meter by removing the lid. Watch the dial on top of the meter, if it is still turning, there is a leak between the meter and the house. This happens only if you have a leaking valve. Then your leak may also be inside the house. Once you are certain that there is a leakage, call the plumber at the earliest.

#3. Check the hot water tanks: In most of the homes the hot water tanks are plumbed directly into a drain and there may be some leaking happening there. It is always recommended to keep the pressure relief valve in proper shape. In case you fear there is a water leak, you can open the drain pipe and check for yourself. If you are not able to remove the drain pipe you can listen for a hissing sound, which indicates a  leak there.

#4. Locate all hose-bibs: They are basically piping you hook your houses too. Usually, most homers have one hose-bib in the front and another in the back. Make sure you spot every hose-bib in the house and listen to them carefully. You can use a screwdriver, put your thumb knuckle on top of the screwdriver, and place the knuckle on the side of your head, immediately in front of your ear.  Listen carefully for any sound emitting from the hose-bib. If you hear anything, note it from where it is coming, mark the area and then repeat the process with the other hose-bibs.

The above are a few ways of water leakage detection in your homes. These techniques will help you understand the water system in your homes better. Make sure you search for professional help once you detect water leaks.
