There are various factors you need to consider:

  • First and foremost, it depends on where you intend using the planters.  If you need the trough for a kitchen or a living room, it is better to choose a wooden or a metal planter. This will enhance the room and make it better. This can also be used in bathrooms. If a rustic touch is needed one can choose a terracotta, stone or cement trough.
  • You can create your own herb garden in the kitchen on the window sill when you have a planter trough. These troughs can be used to plant and grow aromatic herbs or fresh vegetables or greens. However, if these need to be wheelchair accessible, they should not be planted too high else it will not be accessible to person who is in the wheel chair hence making them unable to water or maintain the plants.
  • Planters can also be used as a static screen to add more privacy or to create a visual boundary for a patio. It's also great if one wants to grow organic and fresh fruit vegetables.
  • When one wants wheelchair accessible planter troughs and one is not physically very able, these troughs would need to be either very lightweight or easily movable so they can be carried by the person on the wheelchair in the house or else they could be outdoor planters where they are kept on the ground or on very low platforms. Another option would be to get planters which have wheels and a handle which can be easily wheeled around.
  • The planters should be low so that the person on a wheelchair is able to conveniently take care of the plants, do some watering as well as trimming and pruning.

Points to be kept in mind:

  • There should be space between the plants as well as the planters as the plants will be able to develop when there is space to grow and get enough sunlight. Space is also necessary to prevent diseases from spreading from one plant to the other and from one planter to the next.
  • In the planter, when there are gaps, these spaces should be filled with compost but not to the brim. The compost should be put so that it ends at least an inch or two below the brim of the planter.
  • When planting the plants in the planter, for the sake of ease as well as comfort for the person tending the plants and also for aesthetic value, the shorter plants should be placed at the front  and the taller ones should be placed at the back. This would make it easier for a person on a wheelchair to access and  take care of the plants easily.
  • When planting in the planter, the type of the planter should be taken into consideration as well. There are some which are lightweight ones and will not be able to support heavy plants or those that grow too big.
  • When choosing for a person who is on the wheel chair, it is better to choose planters which should not be hung from the ceiling or from rafters.

These are some points to be kept in mind when choosing wheelchair accessible planter troughs so that everyone in your house can take care of the plants.
