The right way of Cleaning Curtains

How often you change or go for cleaning curtains? We barely do that in months, except we run a handy vacuum cleaner on them roughly in a week. This method can apparently seem effective, but dust particles are still there nonetheless. People who have an obsession with cleaning will make sure to wash their curtains with detergent, which makes them look new-like again.

Cleaning curtains can be a tough task, but you also have the option of dry-cleaning them. Before you adopt any of the methods, it becomes important to understand that cleaning methods vary as per the type of curtains. For example, there are materials that need to be dry-cleaned while there are others that can be washed at home. You must check this before you go ahead with curtain cleaning.

We will discuss what you should do and avoid while Cleaning Curtains:

Don’t wash curtains that need to be dry-cleaned: If your curtains are not made of washable fabric, there is no reason to soak them in water. The linings and seams tend to shrink in the process, thereby making your curtains looking shoddy. If your curtains come with the instruction of being dry-cleaned, they may not withstand washing. Read the instruction manual thoroughly before jumping the gun.

Do treat special fabrics with care:  There are different fabrics which are used for making curtains, the method of cleaning also varies. If the fabric is as costly as velvet, or it is velvet, we strongly recommend to dry-clean it. You can also skip dry-cleaning by washing them with just a brush. Velvet doesn’t tend to hold dust particles and you can clean them into new with just a couple of swiped. There are also velvet-friendly vacuum cleaners available in the market with which you can clean your curtains. Try investing in one of them and you will be sorted for life.

Do use lukewarm water while machine cleaning: If the fabric is machine washable, then you can easily clean them at home. However, it is advisable that you must first soak the curtains in lukewarm water before cleaning curtains. The stubborn dust particles will also loosen up before machine cleaning if you soak the curtains in lukewarm water infused with mild detergent just ahead of machine cleaning them. When done, you can let them dry by hanging them on a clothesline or in a clothes dryer.

Do clean sheer fabric with caution: Sheer fabrics are known to be very fragile. Ideally, you should wash them as soon as dust appears because they show fewer signs of being dirty as compared to other fabrics. The sheer fabrics must be cleaned cautiously if left unattended, the dust particles will start accumulating, leading to discoloration of curtains. Avoid heavy detergents while washing sheer clothes because it can lead to their complete discoloration. Even if you are washing in the machine, don’t let it spin more than 2-3 minutes. Take it off the machine before it hits the five minutes mark.
When drying, put the sheer curtains in terry-cloth towels in the dryer and heat no more than 2-3 minutes. If you find the curtains are slightly dumped still, you can hang them in a clothes-dryer and wait until they have completely dried and are ready to be used. You can also use a regular steam iron to smooth them if you wish so.

Conclusion- Cleaning curtains can become easy with the above-mentioned tips, but there are times when you cannot wash them regularly and certain curtain materials need to be dry cleaned. In such a case, it becomes important that you must go for dry cleaning.
